Fire breaks out at Sorrento Tower in Andheri West, Mumbai; dozens evacuated safely
A fire broke out at Sorrento Tower in Andheri West, Mumbai, on Thursday morning, triggering a swift emergency response and the safe evacuation of several residents from the high-rise building.
Officials said the fire originated on the 14th floor of the 23-storey residential tower located on Veera Desai Road, near the Country Club area. The incident was reported to the Mumbai Fire Brigade at around 10.05 am.
Fire crews reached the spot within minutes and categorised the incident as a Level-I fire, indicating a limited blaze. While the flames were confined to one floor, heavy smoke spread to upper levels, causing residents to move to refuge areas as a precaution.
Around 30 to 40 residents were evacuated from the refuge area on the 16th floor through staircases, fire officials said. Ventilation and smoke-clearing operations were carried out simultaneously to ensure no one remained trapped inside the building.
Multiple agencies were placed on alert, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, local police, ambulance services, electricity officials, and civic ward staff. Power supply to affected sections of the building was regulated to support firefighting efforts and ensure safety.
As of late morning, no injuries or casualties had been reported. Fire officials said the situation was under control and cooling operations were underway to prevent any recurrence.
The cause of the fire at Sorrento Tower, Andheri West, has not yet been established and will be determined after a technical inspection. The incident once again highlights the importance of fire safety readiness in Mumbai’s high-rise residential buildings, particularly effective evacuation planning and smoke management systems.
