Massive Fire Breaks Out at Ashok Mill Compound in Dharavi; Firefighters Battle Blaze Through the Night

Mumbai witnessed another major fire emergency after a massive blaze erupted late Sunday night at the Ashok Mill Compound in the Dharavi area, one of the city’s busiest and most densely populated localities. The fire, which broke out near 90 Feet Road close to Laxmi Medical, triggered a large-scale firefighting operation that continued for several hours overnight.

According to officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the incident was first reported around 10:39 pm on May 17. Fire engines and emergency response teams were immediately rushed to the location after local residents noticed thick smoke and flames rising from inside the industrial compound.

Initially classified as a Level-I fire, the situation reportedly intensified during the night due to the highly combustible materials stored inside the premises. Around 3 am, the blaze was upgraded to a Level-II fire, indicating a more serious emergency requiring additional firefighting resources and manpower.

Authorities said the fire spread across multiple galas and structures within the compound, including ground-plus-one, ground-plus-two and ground-plus-three floor units. Officials confirmed that the flames were largely confined to electrical wiring, electrical installations, garment machinery, wooden furniture, readymade clothing stock and raw materials stored inside the units.

The Ashok Mill Compound area is known for housing several small-scale garment and industrial operations, many of which store fabric, packaging material and electrical equipment in tightly packed spaces. Such conditions often make firefighting operations more challenging, especially during late-night hours when visibility becomes limited and access routes remain narrow.

Civic officials estimated the affected portion of the compound to be approximately 40 by 70 feet. Thick smoke engulfed nearby sections of the area as firefighters continued efforts to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent structures and commercial units.

Residents living close to the compound gathered outside during the operation, while authorities secured the surrounding area as a precautionary measure. Videos and visuals from the scene showed intense flames shooting out from upper portions of the structure while firefighters used multiple water lines to contain the blaze.

Despite the scale of the fire, officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties had been reported till the latest available update. Rescue teams and emergency personnel remained stationed at the site overnight to ensure that no individuals were trapped inside the affected structures.

The Mumbai Fire Brigade deployed several firefighting vehicles, water tankers and support teams to the area. Cooling operations also continued simultaneously to reduce the possibility of the fire reigniting from overheated machinery or electrical systems.

While the exact cause of the blaze has not yet been officially confirmed, preliminary observations suggest that electrical installations inside the garment units may have contributed to the incident. However, a detailed investigation is expected once the site becomes fully accessible and safe for inspection.

Fire incidents inside industrial and commercial clusters remain a recurring concern in Mumbai, particularly in congested areas where multiple businesses operate from older structures with extensive electrical usage. Safety experts have repeatedly highlighted the need for regular fire audits, proper electrical maintenance and improved emergency access routes in such zones.

Dharavi, often referred to as one of Asia’s largest informal settlements, contains a mix of residential homes, workshops and manufacturing units operating in close proximity. Fires in these areas can escalate rapidly because of dense construction patterns and the presence of flammable materials.

In recent years, Mumbai authorities have intensified awareness campaigns regarding industrial fire safety, but incidents involving factories, warehouses and storage units continue to surface across the city during summer months when electrical load tends to increase.
