Who Is Deepanshu Shokeen? Independent Candidate Wins DUSU Vice-President Post in 2026

Deepanshu Shokeen has emerged as the independent winner of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) Vice-President election, securing 30,615 votes after 20 rounds of counting on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
His victory stood out in an election where the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured the other three central posts — President, Secretary and Joint Secretary. Shokeen defeated ABVP’s Ishu Maurya, who received 16,910 votes, while NSUI candidate Vir Chatrath polled 4,313 votes. Left candidate Akshat Shikhar received 2,383 votes and Aranya Singh Rathore secured 2,274 votes.
The result is particularly notable because Shokeen entered the contest as an Independent after initially seeking an NSUI nomination. His campaign and eventual victory made him one of the most closely watched candidates in this year’s DUSU election.

Who is Deepanshu Shokeen?
Deepanshu Shokeen is a student of the Department of Buddhist Studies at Delhi University. Before pursuing his current studies, he graduated from Shaheed Bhagat Singh College.
Shokeen comes from Peeragarhi in Delhi. According to reports, his father works as a bus conductor and his mother is an Anganwadi worker. His family background and his decision to pursue student politics have been part of his public profile during the election campaign.
Reports also state that Shokeen had been interested in student politics despite his father’s preference that he prepare for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations.
From NSUI aspirant to Independent candidate
Shokeen’s route to the DUSU Vice-President post began with an association with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI).
He had initially sought an NSUI ticket and filed his nomination as an organisation-backed candidate. However, he was subsequently asked to withdraw. Instead of stepping out of the election, Shokeen decided to contest as an Independent candidate.
That decision changed the nature of the Vice-President contest. Shokeen went on to campaign independently against candidates backed by major student organisations, eventually securing more than 30,000 votes.
His final tally was also the highest among the four candidates who won the central DUSU posts in 2026.
Student safety and accommodation became important campaign issues
Student accommodation and safety were among the issues that received considerable attention during the election.
The recent collapse of a PG accommodation building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, in which several people, including Delhi University students, died, became part of the wider student debate around accommodation and safety.
Shokeen had publicly taken a strong position following the Satya Niketan incident. Reports said he vowed not to wear slippers until justice was delivered, making the issue a prominent part of his campaign identity.
Following his victory, student safety and accommodation are expected to remain among the issues facing the new DUSU leadership.

DUSU election saw 40.46% voter turnout
The 2026 DUSU election recorded a voter turnout of 40.46 per cent across 52 polling centres, according to election coverage. More than 1.51 lakh students were eligible to vote.
Voting was conducted on September 18, while counting began at 8 am on September 19 at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus. A total of 20 candidates contested the four central posts.
The turnout was reported as the highest in three years, although participation remained below half of the eligible electorate.
Delhi High Court restricts victory celebrations
The election was conducted amid heightened security and scrutiny over campaign-related violations.
The Delhi High Court had directed that victory processions should not be held following the declaration of the DUSU results. The restrictions covered roads, university premises and hostels, with authorities instructed to ensure compliance.
The directions came against the backdrop of concerns over campaign conduct, crowd management and law-and-order issues during the election period.
What comes next for Deepanshu Shokeen?
Shokeen’s victory gives an Independent candidate a prominent position on the new DUSU central panel for the 2026-27 academic session.
His transition from an aspiring NSUI candidate to an Independent winner is likely to remain one of the defining stories of this year’s student elections. His campaign was closely linked with issues such as accommodation and student safety, while the final result demonstrated that the Vice-President contest could produce a different outcome from the other three central posts.
The new DUSU office-bearers will now take charge for the academic session, with student welfare, campus facilities, accommodation and safety among the issues likely to remain central to the union’s work.
