PM Modi Meets Giorgia Meloni in Rome, Visits Colosseum as India-Italy Ties Enter New Strategic Phase

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday for the final leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour, receiving a warm welcome from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as India and Italy moved to deepen their growing strategic partnership across trade, defence, technology, and cultural cooperation.

The visit comes at a time when New Delhi is strengthening its engagement with European nations amid shifting global geopolitical equations and increasing focus on economic partnerships, energy security, and technological collaboration. Modi’s Italy stop follows visits to the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Norway during a packed diplomatic outreach from May 15 to May 20.

Soon after landing in the Italian capital, PM Modi met Meloni over dinner before the two leaders visited Rome’s historic Colosseum, one of the world’s most recognised cultural landmarks. Images of the leaders posing together against the illuminated backdrop of the ancient amphitheatre quickly drew attention online, with social media users once again reviving the popular “Melodi” nickname coined during earlier interactions between Modi and Meloni at global summits.

Sharing photographs from the meeting, Giorgia Meloni welcomed the Indian Prime Minister with the message, “Welcome to Rome, my friend!” The Italian leader also posted another image from their visit to the Colosseum, underlining the warmth visible in recent India-Italy diplomatic exchanges.

Prime Minister Modi later stated that the leaders exchanged views on a broad range of issues and expressed optimism about formal bilateral talks scheduled for Wednesday. According to officials, discussions are expected to focus on implementing the India-Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029, a roadmap aimed at expanding cooperation in multiple sectors including manufacturing, clean energy, digital innovation, defence production, semiconductors, mobility, education, and scientific research.

The India-Italy relationship has gained renewed momentum over the last two years, particularly after both countries elevated ties to a strategic partnership framework. Bilateral trade between India and Italy reportedly crossed USD 16 billion in 2025, reflecting growing economic engagement between the two nations. Italian companies have also steadily increased investments in India across sectors ranging from infrastructure and engineering to luxury manufacturing and renewable energy.

Officials accompanying the delegation indicated that clean technology and industrial cooperation could emerge as major areas of collaboration during this phase of the relationship. Italy is seen as an important European partner for India, especially as New Delhi seeks stronger supply chain partnerships and technology-sharing arrangements with trusted global economies.

Apart from official engagements, Modi also interacted with members of the Indian diaspora in Rome, where several community members gathered to welcome him. Cultural performances highlighting Indian classical traditions were organised during the visit, including dance presentations inspired by Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Kuchipudi.

One emotional moment during the visit involved a young child presenting a portrait to the Prime Minister, after which Modi signed an autograph and spent time interacting with attendees. Representatives from Indian cultural and spiritual organisations based in Europe also met the Prime Minister during his stay.

Artists in Italy additionally performed a musical composition based on Raga Hamsadhwani, reflecting the continuing spread of Indian classical music traditions across Europe. Modi also viewed artwork inspired by the ghats of Varanasi, painted by an Italian artist who has reportedly been influenced by Indian spiritual themes and architecture.

The Prime Minister’s Italy visit follows high-level engagements in Norway, where India and Nordic countries announced a Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership. The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in areas such as energy transition, digital infrastructure, climate innovation, sustainable urban planning, and advanced manufacturing.

During the Nordic summit, leaders from the region and India highlighted the need for trusted partnerships amid rising global uncertainty, economic fragmentation, and ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting supply chains and international markets.

Observers note that Modi’s European outreach reflects India’s broader foreign policy approach of diversifying partnerships while strengthening engagement with technologically advanced economies. Italy, being one of Europe’s major industrial powers and a member of the G7, occupies a significant position in that strategy.

This is not Modi’s first recent visit to Italy. He had previously travelled to the country in June 2024 to attend the G7 Summit, where his interactions with Meloni had attracted significant international and social media attention. Since then, the chemistry between the two leaders has frequently become a talking point online, often blending diplomacy with lighter viral moments shared by users across platforms.

While social media has focused heavily on the visual and personal moments from the Rome visit, officials on both sides appear more focused on translating diplomatic goodwill into concrete economic and strategic outcomes. With global alliances undergoing rapid shifts, India and Italy are increasingly positioning themselves as reliable long-term partners in areas extending beyond traditional diplomacy.
