Mamata Banerjee’s Niece Found Dead at Birbhum Home, Police Begin Investigation

Mamata Banerjee’s niece was found dead at her residence in Birbhum’s Rampurhat area on Tuesday, September 1, with police launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The deceased has been identified as 28-year-old Bristi Mukherjee. Her body was recovered from a room on the second floor of her family home in Kusumba village, police officials said.

Police subsequently sent the body to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Officials said the exact circumstances leading to her death would be established after the medical examination and other aspects of the investigation are completed.

What police and family members said

According to family members, Bristi had been dealing with depression for several years and was receiving treatment. Her family also said she had been under considerable personal and professional strain.

Bristi had previously worked as a non-teaching employee at a government-aided school. Her employment was affected by the legal proceedings surrounding the recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff in West Bengal. Thousands of appointments were cancelled following court findings concerning irregularities in the recruitment process.

Her family has linked the loss of her employment to the distress she had been experiencing. However, police have not announced any final conclusion regarding the reason for her death.

Who was Bristi Mukherjee?

Bristi was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, who is related to Mamata Banerjee and has been associated with the Trinamool Congress in the Rampurhat area.

The family has roots in Kusumba village, where the incident took place. Reports also indicate that Bristi had been facing marital difficulties and divorce proceedings, adding another personal circumstance that investigators may examine as part of the broader inquiry.

Recruitment case adds context

Bristi’s employment history is significant because it comes against the backdrop of the long-running West Bengal school recruitment controversy.

The courts had struck down a large number of appointments in government-aided schools after allegations of irregularities in the recruitment process. The matter affected both teaching and non-teaching staff and resulted in thousands of people losing their positions.

Reports indicate that Bristi was among those whose employment was affected by the court proceedings. Her family members said she had struggled emotionally after losing her job.

That background, however, should not be treated as establishing a direct cause for her death. The police investigation and post-mortem examination are expected to provide more clarity.

Investigation underway

Police officials have so far maintained that the circumstances surrounding the death are under investigation. The post-mortem report will be an important part of the inquiry, while investigators are also expected to examine the circumstances at the residence and gather statements from family members and others who may have relevant information.

The incident has drawn attention because of Bristi’s family connection to one of West Bengal’s most prominent political figures. However, authorities have not indicated that her political connections played any role in the incident.

For now, the focus remains on establishing the facts surrounding the death. Further details are expected after the post-mortem and completion of the initial police inquiry.
