Pralhad Joshi Gets Education Ministry Charge After Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns

Pralhad Joshi has been given charge of the Education Ministry after President Droupadi Murmu accepted Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers on Saturday, July 25. The change comes at a politically sensitive moment, with student protests over alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks having continued for more than a month.

The President’s Secretariat confirmed that Pradhan’s resignation was accepted with immediate effect on the Prime Minister’s advice. The same communique said Cabinet Minister Pralhad Joshi would take charge of the Ministry of Education in addition to his existing responsibilities.

Pradhan’s resignation came on the 35th day of protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The demonstrations, led by the CJP and associated with organiser Abhijeet Dipke, had focused on examination integrity, alleged paper leaks and wider concerns about the way national-level entrance examinations are conducted.

Why Dharmendra Pradhan resigned

In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan said he was stepping down with students and the wider education system in mind. He also referred to concerns that anti-national elements could exploit the situation surrounding the protests and said he wanted students to remain focused on their education and careers.

CJP calls off protest after government assurance

Hours after Pradhan’s resignation, CJP spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka appeared at a joint press conference with Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. They announced that the organisation was ending its protest, describing the decision as being taken in “good faith” after the Centre assured them that their demands would be addressed.

Pradhan’s resignation had been one of the central demands associated with the protest led by Abhijeet Dipke, a Boston University graduate who returned to India and became a prominent face of the movement.

The conclusion of the protest now shifts attention from the street demonstrations to what the government does next. The assurances given to the protesters will be closely watched, particularly by students and families who have been seeking greater transparency in competitive examinations.

Pralhad Joshi takes over additional responsibility

Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi will now handle the Education Ministry alongside his existing portfolios. Before receiving the additional charge, Joshi was serving as Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and New and Renewable Energy. Government records list him as the minister overseeing those portfolios.

The arrangement means that Joshi will inherit an education portfolio facing immediate pressure on several fronts, including examination credibility, student concerns and the implementation of existing education reforms.

His immediate challenge will be to maintain continuity in the ministry while responding to the concerns that fuelled the protests. The government will also need to demonstrate that assurances made during the negotiations translate into concrete measures.

Who is Pralhad Joshi?

Joshi is a senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader from Karnataka and has served multiple terms in Parliament. He has held several Union Cabinet responsibilities under the Narendra Modi government.

He entered the Lok Sabha in 2004 and has remained a significant political figure from Karnataka. His current ministerial responsibilities have included consumer affairs, food and public distribution, as well as new and renewable energy.

His appointment to oversee education therefore adds another major policy area to an already substantial ministerial workload.

What happens next for the Education Ministry?

The immediate focus is likely to be on restoring confidence among students and parents.
