Ram Rahim Gets 40-Day Parole to Celebrate Birthday at Sirsa Dera, His 14th Jail Release Since Conviction

Ram Rahim gets 40-day parole to celebrate his birthday at the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters in Sirsa, marking his 14th temporary release since being convicted of rape and murder in 2017.

On Tuesday morning, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh walked out of Haryana’s Sunaria Jail under heavy police escort. He reached the Sirsa dera around 9 am in a convoy of seven SUVs. The self-styled godman, who turns 58 on August 15, is expected to stay at the Sirsa campus for the full duration of his parole.

This is the first time in eight years that Ram Rahim will celebrate his birthday at the Sirsa dera. In previous years, his birthday-time paroles saw him staying at the Barnawa Ashram in Uttar Pradesh. Although followers are known to organize grand celebrations, this year’s event is expected to be low-key with no permission granted for large gatherings. He is likely to address his followers virtually.

Despite being convicted of serious crimes, Ram Rahim has repeatedly received parole and furloughs—often coinciding with politically sensitive periods like elections in Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan, where the sect has strong influence.

Timeline: Ram Rahim’s Temporary Jail Releases

Since 2020, the Dera chief has spent at least 344 days outside jail, drawing comparisons to annual earned leaves in corporate jobs. Here’s a breakdown of his releases:

In 2025 alone, Ram Rahim will have spent nearly three months out of prison.

Convictions and Legal Background

Ram Rahim is serving a 20-year prison sentence for raping two of his female disciples, a conviction handed down by a special CBI court in 2017. In 2019, he was also sentenced to life imprisonment for orchestrating the murder of journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati.

In a separate case, the Punjab and Haryana High Court acquitted him in May last year in the 2002 murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh. The court cited irregularities and gaps in the investigation as reasons for overturning the lower court’s decision.

Sect’s Political Clout

The Sirsa-headquartered Dera Sacha Sauda enjoys strong support in parts of northern India, particularly in Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and some parts of Delhi. In Haryana alone, it has a wide follower base in districts like Sirsa, Hisar, Fatehabad, Kurukshetra, and Kaithal.

Critics have repeatedly pointed out that Ram Rahim’s paroles are often timed to align with state elections or religious events—raising concerns over political favoritism and the selective application of the law.

Despite being convicted of heinous crimes, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh continues to walk in and out of prison, raising serious questions about the justice system’s approach to powerful individuals. With 344 days spent outside jail and counting, his case has become a subject of national attention and political debate.
