Mumbai May Get 1 Lakh Capacity Cricket Stadium as Maharashtra Plans Global Sports Landmark

Mumbai may soon be home to one of the world’s largest cricket stadiums, as the Maharashtra government moves ahead with plans to develop a massive sports infrastructure project with a seating capacity of one lakh spectators.

The proposed stadium, expected to come up within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is being positioned as a global sporting landmark. Officials say the project is being envisioned as a state-of-the-art facility that will not only host high-profile matches but also elevate the overall sports ecosystem in the state.

The initiative is being led under the direction of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, with key discussions already underway involving stakeholders from both cricket administration and urban development bodies.

According to officials familiar with the development, detailed planning meetings have been held between Ajinkya Naik, President of the Mumbai Cricket Association, and Vijay Singhal, Managing Director of City and Industrial Development Corporation. These discussions have focused on preparing a roadmap for the project, including design, development strategy, and infrastructure integration.

If executed as planned, the stadium will rank among the largest cricket venues globally. Beyond its scale, the project aims to introduce modern amenities, improved spectator experiences, and advanced sporting infrastructure that meets international standards.

Speaking about the development, MCA President Ajinkya Naik described the initiative as a significant milestone for Maharashtra’s sports ecosystem. He noted that such a large-scale venue would not only strengthen Mumbai’s position in cricket but also provide a major boost to talent development. The facility is expected to create new opportunities for emerging players and support the growth of cricket at grassroots and professional levels.

Officials also highlighted that the project aligns with the state’s broader vision of sports-led development. By investing in world-class infrastructure, Maharashtra aims to attract major international sporting events and increase sports tourism, which could have a positive economic impact on the region.

Urban planners involved in the discussions indicated that the stadium will likely be part of a larger integrated development plan, ensuring connectivity, accessibility, and supporting infrastructure such as transport and commercial zones.

While timelines and final approvals are yet to be officially announced, the proposal signals Maharashtra’s intent to strengthen its global sporting footprint. If completed, the stadium could redefine Mumbai’s identity as not just India’s financial capital, but also a premier international sports destination.
