Shubhanshu Shukla was born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He is the youngest of three siblings. His father, Shambhu Dayal Shukla, worked in government service, while his mother, Asha Shukla, was a homemaker. He studied at City Montessori School in Lucknow and later earned a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the National Defence Academy (NDA) in 2005. Inspired by stories of bravery from the Kargil War (1999), he chose a path of service in the defense forces.

🛫 Military Career

In June 2006, Shukla joined the Indian Air Force (IAF) after completing his training at the Air Force Academy. Over time, he built a strong reputation as a skilled test pilot and combat leader, accumulating over 2,000 flight hours on various fighter and transport aircraft such as the Su-30MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier, and An-32.

He rose through the ranks, becoming a Wing Commander in 2019 and later promoted to Group Captain in 2024.

🚀 Astronaut Training & Selection

In February 2024, Prime Minister Modi announced Shukla as one of the four astronauts selected for India’s Gaganyaan mission. Shukla had already begun his astronaut training in Russia’s Star City back in 2019.

In August 2024, he was named prime astronaut for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4). His backup crew member was Group Captain Prasanth Nair.

On June 25, 2025, Shukla launched into space aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 with the Crew Dragon ‘Grace’. They docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on June 26. Shukla became the first Indian on the ISS and only the second Indian in space after Rakesh Sharma in 1984.

During the 18-day mission, the crew conducted over 60 experiments, including seven Indian-designed studies on topics like:

  • Cognitive health
  • Muscle atrophy
  • Microbial adaptation
  • Crop growth in microgravity

🌍 Return to Earth & Legacy

The mission concluded with a splashdown on July 15, 2025, in the Pacific Ocean near California.
