Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026: Vijay’s TVK Surges Ahead of DMK in Stunning Lead
Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026 are pointing towards a major political development, with actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), taking a strong lead over the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in early counting trends.
According to initial data, TVK is leading in over 100 constituencies, placing it ahead of Chief Minister MK Stalin’s DMK, which is trailing significantly. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is also performing strongly and remains ahead of the DMK in several seats, making the contest more competitive than expected.
Vijay, popularly known as ‘Thalapathi’ among his fans, is contesting from the Perambur constituency and is currently leading by a margin of around 3,000 votes against his nearest rival. While exit polls had hinted at a promising debut for his party, the scale of the lead has surprised political observers across the state.
High Voter Turnout and Intense Contest
The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections were conducted in a single phase on April 23, 2026, across 234 constituencies. The state recorded an impressive voter turnout of approximately 85.1%, the highest ever in its electoral history. Voting took place at more than 75,000 polling stations, reflecting strong public participation.
The election witnessed a multi-cornered contest. The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes the Congress and Left parties, faced a combined challenge from the AIADMK-BJP alliance and Vijay’s TVK, which chose to contest independently across all seats.
Vijay’s Entry into Politics and Rapid Rise
Vijay formally launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in February 2024, marking his transition from cinema to politics. He had clearly stated at the time that his focus would be on the 2026 assembly elections, and he would step away from films to dedicate himself to public service.
His first major political rally in October 2024 at Vikravandi in Villupuram district drew massive crowds, signaling his popularity beyond cinema. During the campaign, Vijay positioned his party around themes of social justice, secularism, and governance reforms.
He also took strong positions against what he described as divisive politics and corruption, stating that his party would work towards inclusive development. His emphasis on a two-language policy—Tamil and English—and support for caste-based census also became key talking points.
A Career Shaped by Cinema and Public Appeal
Born as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar on June 22, 1974, in Chennai, Vijay comes from a film background. His father, SA Chandrasekhar, is a noted filmmaker, while his mother Shobha is a singer. Vijay began acting as a child artist and later debuted as a lead actor in the early 1990s.
Over the years, he built a massive fan following with successful films like Ghilli, Kaththi, Theri, Mersal, and Bigil. His transition from a commercial film star to a socially conscious public figure helped him connect with a wider audience, especially the youth.

Challenges and Controversies Along the Way
Vijay’s political journey has not been without challenges. In September 2024, a tragic stampede during a TVK rally in Karur led to the death of 39 people. Vijay later expressed grief and announced financial assistance for the victims and their families.
He has also faced personal and political disputes, including differences with his father over the use of his name in political activities. Vijay had publicly clarified that he had no connection with any political party formed by his father.
Current Trends and What They Indicate
As per the latest updates, TVK is leading in over 106 seats, while AIADMK is ahead in around 70 seats. The DMK, which has been in power, is currently trailing behind both parties in several constituencies.
With the majority mark set at 118 seats in the 234-member assembly, the trends suggest that Vijay’s party could play a decisive role in forming the next government if it maintains its lead.
What Lies Ahead
The final results will determine whether Tamil Nadu is heading for a new political era led by a first-time party or if alliances and later counting rounds change the outcome. For now, the trends indicate a strong debut for Vijay in electoral politics, reshaping the state’s traditional political landscape.
As counting continues, all eyes remain on key constituencies and the overall seat tally, which will decide the future course of governance in Tamil Nadu.
