Mumbai Coastal Road BMW Crash: 3 Students Killed After Car Plunges From Bridge

A Mumbai Coastal Road BMW crash early Sunday morning, September 20, 2026, left three college students dead and another critically injured after the car lost control, crashed through the edge of the elevated road and plunged into an under-construction area near Lotus Jetty.

The accident took place at around 5:20 am near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College, as the black BMW was travelling from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali. CCTV footage has since surfaced showing the vehicle moving at high speed before breaking through the roadside barrier and falling from the bridge.

CCTV captures BMW falling from Mumbai Coastal Road

The CCTV footage shows the BMW approaching the section of the Coastal Road before suddenly veering towards the outer edge. The vehicle then struck the barrier and went off the elevated section, falling into an under-construction parking area below.

The footage has drawn attention because of the speed of the vehicle and the severity of the impact. Images from the crash site show the BMW extensively damaged, with the front section crushed and the passenger compartment badly affected.

Three students killed, one critically injured

All four occupants were taken to Nair Hospital following the crash. Three were declared dead, while the fourth occupant was admitted for treatment in critical condition.

According to police-linked reporting, the deceased have been identified as Sanay Gujjar, 21, Aditya Jakasania, 19, and Dhairya Sheth, 17. Aditya Oswal was critically injured and remained under treatment at Nair Hospital.

The students were from Ahmedabad and were studying in Mumbai. Police said some of the students were pursuing BBA studies at a management college in Vile Parle, while the group was staying in paying guest accommodation. The BMW was reportedly associated with Gujjar’s family.

Police suspect speeding led to loss of control

The preliminary police assessment points to excessive speed as a possible factor in the crash.

Police said the BMW was travelling towards Haji Ali when the driver apparently lost control. The vehicle first struck the outer portion of the Coastal Road before breaking through the edge and falling roughly 75 feet.

Tardeo police have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including statements from witnesses and people known to the victims. Authorities will also examine available CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the precise sequence of events.

At this stage, the reference to speeding is a preliminary assessment and the investigation will determine the full circumstances behind the accident.

The students had reportedly visited Marine Drive

According to reports, the four students had gone to Marine Drive before the accident. They were travelling back towards the Haji Ali side when the crash occurred.

The incident happened during the early morning hours, when traffic on the Coastal Road is generally lighter. The road is designed as a high-speed corridor connecting South Mumbai with the western suburbs, making responsible driving and adherence to speed limits particularly important.

Wrecked BMW recovered from crash site

The impact left the BMW severely damaged. Photographs and videos from the location show a heavily mangled vehicle and debris scattered around the crash site.

The vehicle had reportedly broken through the roadside barrier before landing in an area where construction work was underway. Emergency personnel and police reached the location after the accident and the occupants were taken to Nair Hospital.

Families of the victims were informed about the tragedy, with relatives reaching the hospital as authorities continued the formal identification and investigation process.

Coastal Road had faced earlier speeding concerns

The fatal crash comes only weeks after Mumbai Police took action over another incident involving high-performance cars on the Coastal Road.

On September 3, police registered a case after a video allegedly showed several luxury and performance cars being driven at high speed inside the Coastal Road tunnel. The vehicles reportedly included a Lamborghini, BMW M2 and BMW Z4. The case involved allegations of dangerous driving and endangering the safety of others.

The latest crash has again brought attention to speeding and road safety on the Coastal Road. However, police have yet to complete their investigation into the exact cause of Sunday’s accident.

Investigation continues

The deaths of three young students have turned the early-morning crash into a major road-safety investigation in Mumbai. Police are expected to examine CCTV footage, the condition of the vehicle, witness accounts and other available evidence as they establish what happened in the moments before the BMW crossed the road barrier.
