Mumbai Mazgaon Ganpati Procession Tension After Eggs Allegedly Thrown at Idol, FIR Registered

Mumbai Mazgaon Ganpati procession turned tense on Sunday night, August 23, after eggs were allegedly thrown at a Ganesh idol being taken to a pandal in the Mazgaon area of South Mumbai.

The incident took place during the arrival procession of the Mazgaoncha Morya Ganeshotsav Mandal. According to police officials, the eggs were allegedly thrown from the direction of the Continental Heights building as the procession was moving towards the pandal. One of the eggs reportedly landed on the idol, triggering anger among devotees and members of the Ganpati mandal.

The incident quickly drew a large crowd to the area. Arguments and protests followed, creating a tense situation around the procession route. Police personnel reached the spot and senior officers appealed to those gathered to remain calm and avoid actions that could further disturb the situation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Jayant Meena was among the officers who intervened. Police subsequently increased security in the area to prevent the situation from escalating further. Reports said the crowd eventually dispersed after police assured those present that the incident would be investigated and appropriate action would be taken.

FIR registered under BNS sections

The Byculla Police have registered an FIR against unidentified persons in connection with the alleged egg throwing. Officials said the case has been registered under Sections 299 and 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Section 299 deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings, while Section 196 relates to promoting enmity between different groups. No arrest had been reported as of Monday, August 24, and the investigation remains underway.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding buildings and the procession route to establish where the eggs were thrown from and identify the person or persons allegedly responsible.

Police are also verifying the circumstances of the incident rather than relying solely on claims made by people present at the spot. This could help establish the exact sequence of events and determine responsibility.

Police step up security in Mazgaon

The incident comes at a time when Mumbai is witnessing a series of Ganpati idol arrival events ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi. Large processions draw thousands of devotees onto the streets, making crowd management and maintaining communal harmony a major law-and-order priority for the police.

Additional personnel were deployed in Mazgaon as a precautionary measure, including around the Ganesh pandal. Authorities have been urging devotees and organisers to remain peaceful and allow the investigation to proceed.

The incident also followed another serious Ganpati-related incident in South Mumbai. On Saturday night, a portion of a 22-foot Ganesh idol collapsed during a procession in Bhuleshwar, killing two people and injuring five others, including two children.

While the two incidents are unrelated, they have highlighted the challenges faced by authorities during large-scale Ganpati arrival processions, where huge crowds, large idols and narrow city roads can create significant safety and law-and-order concerns.

Investigation now underway

For now, the focus in the Mazgaon case is on identifying who allegedly threw the eggs and determining exactly what happened during the procession. CCTV footage and other available evidence are expected to play an important role in the investigation.

With Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations approaching, maintaining peace along procession routes will remain particularly important in Mumbai. Police and festival organisers are expected to continue coordinating closely to ensure that religious celebrations take place without further disruption.

The authorities have appealed for restraint while the investigation continues, with further action expected once the alleged perpetrators are identified and the evidence is examined.
