CBI Arrests Two Brothers in Chandranath Rath Murder Case, Probes Alleged Political Conspiracy

The Chandranath Rath murder case has taken a significant turn after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two brothers who are alleged to have played a key role in the conspiracy behind the killing of Rath, a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Investigators say the arrests mark another important step in an ongoing probe that is examining not only the planning of the crime but also whether there was a larger political motive behind it.

According to CBI officials, the accused have been identified as Sagar Sonkar and Sahib (Saheb) Sonkar, who allegedly worked with Rath in the past. Murder Took Place Days After Assembly Election Results

Chandranath Rath was shot dead on the evening of May 6 in Madhyamgram, located in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. Officials said Rath was returning home in his SUV when unidentified assailants opened fire on him.

The incident occurred shortly after the declaration of the West Bengal Assembly election results, making the case politically significant. While the timing of the murder has attracted considerable attention, investigators have not reached any final conclusions regarding the motive and continue to examine all possible angles.

Officials also said call detail records collected during the investigation indicate that the accused were in contact with people linked to a political party office through multiple telephone calls. The agency is examining these communications to determine whether they have any connection to the alleged conspiracy.

The CBI has not publicly identified any political leader in connection with the case, stating that the investigation into the alleged political angle is still underway.

Previous Political Associations Under Investigation

Investigators have stated that both accused were associated with Chandranath Rath’s team and were reportedly BJP workers at the time relevant to the investigation. Officials have also indicated that preliminary findings suggest the brothers had earlier associations with another political party and remained in contact with individuals linked to it.

The agency has not drawn any final conclusions from these interactions, and officials emphasised that the purpose of the ongoing investigation is to establish whether those contacts have any relevance to the alleged conspiracy.

No political party has been accused by the CBI of institutional involvement in the crime, and the agency has not announced any charges against political leaders in connection with the case.

Eleven Arrests So Far

With the latest arrests, the total number of people arrested in the Chandranath Rath murder case has risen to 11.

According to investigators, those arrested include six alleged shooters and several others accused of helping organise different stages of the operation. Earlier arrests were made from multiple states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, as the investigation expanded beyond West Bengal.

Officials believe the alleged conspiracy involved several individuals performing different roles, ranging from planning and logistics to executing the attack.
