Meta Layoffs: Cuts Over 1,500 Jobs in HR and Other Departments

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, recently declared its intention to lay off 10,000 employees and has commenced the process (Meta layoffs). According to individuals who are knowledgeable about the matter, the technology company has terminated over 1,500 employees who worked in the recruiting and Human Resources (HR) departments, as reported by Bloomberg. The same source also mentioned that Meta’s company restructuring could take a few more years to complete, indicating that additional employees may be let go in the near future. It is important to note that this is separate from the 10,000 employees that Meta has already announced its plans to eliminate.

In November 2022, the company terminated employees, citing poor performance as the reason. Recently, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg sent an email to employees, explaining that the new round of layoffs is due to financial issues and the economic downturn. The company has also acknowledged that it over-hired in the past to keep up with competition and support growth. However, with slowing growth and reduced revenue, Meta has decided to let go of employees to improve operational efficiency and achieve better results.

According to an email from Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company will not be conducting all layoffs at once. In April, job cuts will take place in engineering and other departments, while business groups will be affected in late May. Once the layoff process is complete, Meta plans to lift its hiring and transfer freezes in stages. This might come as a surprise to some, given that the company has already laid off 12,500 employees and plans to eliminate an additional 8,500 in the coming months.

Meta had promised to provide severance pay to employees impacted by the initial round of layoffs. However, it remains unclear if the recently laid-off employees will receive any compensation package. In addition, Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that the company intends to eliminate 5,000 open positions. “In some cases, these changes may take until the end of the year to complete. The timelines for international teams will also vary, and local leaders will provide more information,” the CEO stated in the email.

“Overall, we anticipate reducing our team size by approximately 10,000 people and closing around 5,000 additional unfilled roles.”
