Comedian Kunal Kamra has landed in fresh legal trouble after a remark made during his visit to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar sparked controversy. A Supreme Court advocate has issued a legal notice alleging that one of Kamra’s statements hurt the religious sentiments of Hindus and demanding that he remove the video containing the remarks, issue a public apology, and refrain from making similar comments in the future.

The development comes after Kamra attended a public gathering in support of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is continuing an indefinite hunger strike to press for his demands. During his address at the protest site, Kamra made a statement referencing Hindu religious figures while criticising the political establishment. A clip of the remarks later circulated widely on social media, drawing sharp reactions from different sections of the public.

According to the legal notice, Advocate Amita Sachdeva, a lawyer practising before the Supreme Court, has objected to Kamra’s use of the names of Hindu deities in what she described as an inappropriate and offensive context. The notice claims that while criticism of governments and public policies falls within the ambit of free speech, using revered religious figures for political satire crosses an acceptable boundary and has caused offence to many believers.

The notice reportedly asks Kamra to immediately remove the video from all digital platforms where it has been uploaded or shared. It also seeks an unconditional public apology addressed to members of the Hindu community for the alleged insult to their religious beliefs.

In addition, the notice seeks a written undertaking from the comedian that he will avoid making similar remarks involving Hindu deities in future public appearances, performances, or online content. The advocate has stated that failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe may lead to further legal action, including the filing of a police complaint and other proceedings available under Indian law.

So far, there has been no official public response from Kunal Kamra regarding the legal notice. It also remains unclear whether the comedian intends to withdraw the video, contest the allegations, or respond through legal channels.

The controversy unfolded during Kamra’s visit to Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, where he had joined supporters of activist Sonam Wangchuk.
